Sewage Treatment Works
The last upgrade works was in 2014 and currently treats sewage for approximately 4 million customers being the biggest in the UK. The latest upgrade works will ensure the site can treat sewage from up to 4.4 million people and accommodate flows from the Thames Tideway tunnel which is due for completion in 2024. We were engaged by our client to upgrade the security rated fencing on several (9 off) transformer compounds throughout the site.
The Solution
Steelway project team worked closely with the client to produce all mandatory documentation, which included a quotation, detailed drawings, a comprehensive program of works, and RAMS for installation. Before the installation took place, JHT Engineering conducted a site survey to gather comprehensive information. This survey covered various aspects such as site access, laydown areas, crane access, and risk assessments.
Within 7-10 days of the initial enquiry, JHT Engineering had completed a full survey of all transformer compounds and issued a final quote for approval of costs. Within a further 10 days, all drawings for approval had been prepared and issued to the client. Once the drawing had been approved JHT Engineering manufactured on all items and completed this within the agreed 5-week manufacturing window.
Full installation immediately followed and was completed in the agreed 3-week window.
JHT Engineering designed, produced and installed a bespoke transformer compound fencing protection solution, customised to the precise requirements of the customer and the unique needs of the site and in the required timescales. Effectively deploying on-site personnel within the client's remit. All goods were safely transported and lifted into place using authorised equipment and procedures, facilitating a secure, efficient, dependable and timely installation

There were 358 mesh fencing and gates for 9 transformer compounds supplied and installed for this project.
- 1 compound at the inlet works for the 11kV – 3.3kV transformer
- 2 compounds at the inlet works for the 3.3kV – 400v transformers
- 2 compounds at ASP4 for the 11kV – 6.6kV transformers
- 2 compounds at ASP4 for the 6.6kV -400v transformers
- 2 compounds in the sludge area
- 1 external platform with staircase and 2 external steps to the 1nr compound area at ASP4 6.6kV – 400v transform

There was no opportunity to take the machine out of commission at any point. This meant the entire process – from the initial survey and design considerations to the final installation – had to occur while the mixer remained fully operational. The existing steelwork supporting the unit was old and corroding, necessitating a solution that could integrate new, robust support without interrupting service.

According to both BSEN 4592 and Northwest Water (NWL) safety standards, a load-rated handrail is mandatory whenever the weir walkway is in use. JHT Engineering was tasked with a classic retrofit requirement: replacing existing timber supports with new steel brackets designed for enhanced longevity, specifically in a demanding marine environment. Its significant weight and cumbersome nature meant it was unsuitable for single-person operation, posing a clear operational bottleneck that required an urgent and efficient solution.The complexity was further amplified by the cover's location. An overhead gantry used for lifting pumps out of the chamber, along with the legs of a junction box station, were in close proximity. This severely restricted space presented considerable design and installation challenges.
